Handmade by Hiroyuki Tomita in Isehara, Japan
Hand-pinched cup. Matte dark glaze coated on the inside. Decorated with relief patterns in transparent glaze, the exterior is finished by a traditional 'kohiki' technique - that is, brushing white porcelain slip onto the clay body. With the dark clay that the artist uses, the cup reveals layers of colour and special effects mimicking rocks and natural stones.

Hiroyuki Tomita creates a wide range of work, from everyday functional wares to large sculptural works. He also makes large-scale decorative tiles for walls of hotels and inns. Traditional ceramic art plays an important role in his making but he also values new perspectives and creativity a lot. This can be seen in his tablewares. They are bold in colour and made to not only serve the food but also decorate the dining tables.
