About the Artist
Kiyoko Morioka (b. 1974) is a master of the traditional Kutani porcelain technique, a craft she honed at the Prefectural Kutani Yaki Technical Training Institute. Renowned for its intricate designs, vibrant colours, and smooth textures, Kutani porcelain reflects a rich artistic heritage. Morioka’s work is deeply inspired by the subtle beauty of nature, particularly the ever-changing skies of Kanazawa, her hometown. Since completing her Ph.D. in 2016 at Kanazawa College of Art, she has become a prominent figure in Japan’s ceramic art scene and now shares her expertise as an Associate Professor at Kobe Design University. Her work is distinguished by a velvety porcelain texture, achieved through a meticulous sanding process, and ultra-thin rims that elevate the sensory experience of tea and fine dining.
